- Still not sure how I feel about the possibility of Matt Hughes facing Renzo Gracie at UFC 109. Hughes is one of my favorite fighters. His comeback wins amaze me on so many levels. There's part of me that feels like he could still be a somewhat viable contender in the Welterweight Division. Facing a 42 year old Gracie, who hasn't fought in an MMA cage since February 2007, seems like a waste of time. On the other hand, it's an interesting fight with lots of subplots. For the UFC, it is a smart move. Hughes recently signed a new contract and they need him to remain a draw. If he goes out and loses badly to Josh Koscheck or Jon Fitch, his stock drops through the floor. A win against Gracie would at least build some momentum for a future fight with one of the younger Welterweights.
- Okay, apparently Fedor's injury was not as bad as Scott Coker thought. Lets call it 2 months instead of 4-6. Either way, I still think he's on the sidelines until April or May. Rushing him back for a fight with Fabricio Werdum would not make sense. Fedor proved himself against Rogers to the American audience. Let him face the winner of Werdum/Overeem.
- Someone recently asked me about MMA's popularity. My answer was, "It's extremely popular with a decent amount of people." The fact Chuck Liddell's drunken behavior is a non-story to ESPN proves my point. Could you imagine if a well known athlete from Baseball/Football/Basketball did this? I think the moment something like this shows up on ESPN is the time I start losing interest in the sport. I like that it is sort of a big cult and most people still don't get it.
- What's with Randy Couture's scarf?
- Six months ago I wasn't sure Shane Carwin knew how to talk. Now the guy never shuts up.
- I hope the UFC comes up with another big fight for their end of the year show, because as of today it's lacking something special. Last year we had UFC 92, which featured Rampage/Silva, Nogueira/Mir, and Evans/Griffin. In 2007, it was Liddell/Silva and St-Pierre/Hughes. In 2006, Liddell and Ortiz fought for the second time (rest of the card was suspect). There aren't many choices for the promotion. Everyone is either booked or injured and we're only seven weeks out. If I was in charge, I'd switch Florian/Guida (UFC 107) with Griffin/Miller (UFC 108). That would make the end of the year show more appealing to the ticket buyers in Vegas.
- Rich Franklin vs Keith Jardine is being talked about for UFC 110 in Australia. At this point, it's just a rumor.

At the very least, I'm looking for someone to write daily MMA news round-ups. Literally 1-2 sentences for each item with a link to the story. If you do that well, there's a chance I might let you write longer pieces. You should know up front that I'm a complete psycho and do not work well with others. There is no pay involved in this. It's a chance for a writer to gain experience. And, if you have other talents like editing video/pictures/etc, I'd love to hear about it.

Mike Afromowitz of Strikeforce got back to me today and the promotion has made good on their promise to resolve the Davis/Miller situation. For anyone who does not know, Deray Davis and Mark Miller were scheduled to fight on Saturday night's preliminary card, however, due to time constraints the bout was canceled. As I mentioned yesterday, there were reports that the fighters were not paid their full salary and only received their "show" money.
Here is Afromowitz's statement on the matter:
"We paid each fighter his fight purse and are now going to pay each his win bonus. Originally, we attempted to place this matchup on another fight card being promoted by a local promoter in Chicago in a couple of weeks. If both fighters had accepted, we would have paid each his fight purse a second time. Since neither was available due to different circumstances, however, we paid each his win bonus on top of the purse. Please note that this is the first time in Strikeforce history (not only MMA, but also kickboxing) that a situation has ever occurred."
I'm glad Strikeforce resolved the matter. Most times things do not work out this well and the fighters end up getting screwed. |

According to Scott Coker via the LA Times, Fedor's injured thumb will keep him out 4-6 months. The injury includes a fracture and tendon damage. This is pretty much to be expected after Fedor fights. He almost always sustains a hand injury from ramming his fist into his opponent's head. To be honest, I don't think the injury makes much difference. Even if Fedor came out healthy, he wasn't fighting in the next 3 months. He's a top guy and those types average a fight every 6 months. The layoff gives Strikeforce a chance to clear up their Heavyweight picture and hopefully get Alistair Overeem into the mix. If they get Overeem a fight (and a win) in early 2010, it sets up a bout with Fedor during sweeps in May on CBS. |

- I'll continue saying it until they listen to me - Pat Miletich should be an announcer for all of Strikeforce's major events. The fact he is passed over for Frank Shamrock boggles my mind. Honestly, Frank Shamrock isn't even that well known. Most casual fans probably think it's Ken. Maybe that's what Strikeforce is going for, but they'd be a lot better off with Miletich in the booth. He's my favorite MMA announcer because of his concise explanations of the action. He doesn't use excessive technical jargon to make himself sound smart. For him, it's about getting the point across, which is crucial for a TV broadcaster. Next time you watch an event he works, pay attention to the replays. He's perfect every single time. It's really amazing. Are you listening Coker? You've got a star sitting in the minor leagues. Time to cut the fat and put him into the lineup.
- They need to fine tune the fight lineup. The main event did not start until after 11pm ET, which is a major problem because it was not included in the primetime ratings. Although the card was solid, this event was about Fedor/Rogers. You gotta do whatever it takes to have that fight begin at no later than 10:30pm ET. My solution is pretty simple. First, if you're gonna have a five round fight that isn't the main event, limit the live card to three fights. If you happen to have extra time, you can always show an exciting fight from the prelims. Second, tighten up the broadcast and eliminate the fluff. We don't need to see Jason Miller's entrance (we didn't even get to see Fedor or Rogers enter). We also don't need ten minutes of the announcers talking to start things out. No one watches MMA to hear announcers talk. We want to see fights.
- The audio was excellent. I kept a notepad next to me and wrote down random thoughts during the event. Two times I scribbled, "Audio!". I can't remember the last time I noticed the in-cage sounds. The two instances were when Mousasi was punching Sokoudjou from the top and Fedor's KO punch on Rogers. Whatever they did to mic up the cage, I hope they keep doing it.
- Please don't book Fedor/Werdum. You're wasting one of his fights. It's not like MMA fans are clamoring for it. It makes even less sense because the rumor is Brett Rogers will fight Alistair Overeem. Rogers loses to Fedor then gets a title shot? The number one reason why the UFC kills other promotions is because they don't mess around with building to fights. If there is a hypothetical fight that fans want to see, they usually book it. For example, Brock Lesnar could have spent his last two fights working his way towards a title shot. Instead the UFC matched him up with Randy Couture and sold about a million PPVs. Since then Lesnar has become their biggest PPV draw. When a big fight is out there, you gotta take it. MMA is unpredictable and building does not work. Too many things can happen and ruin the script.
- For those of you who do not know, the scheduled bout between Deray Davis and Mark Miller was canceled due to time constraints. It was reported that the fighters only received their "show" money (translation: hardly anything). Canceled fights are a touchy subject. Fighters do not get paid until after the bout. It's not like when you sign a contract with a promotion that you receive two paychecks a month. This means fighters must pay for their training camps out of pocket. Most times sponsors step up and front most of that, but it's not always the case. Also, a sponsor wants to see their brand during the fight, so they're going to pay after it happens. There was some backlash against Strikeforce for canceling the fight and only giving them their "show" money. I contacted the promotion earlier today and they told me they're currently working on the situation and would have more news in the next couple days. As soon as I hear anything, I'll pass it along. Sounds like Davis and Miller will at least get something additional (rescheduled fight for the December event is my guess, but we'll see). Either way, I'm glad Strikeforce is trying to figure something out. It's important for the major promotions to treat fighters well, especially the guys who aren't making the big bucks.

-Ranallo, Johnson, and Shamrock all dressed in shiny suits and looking like Batman villains.
-The announcers were on fire, as usual. ----"That's where Werdum was trying to put his game into the game." - Shamrock ----Shamrock also butchered Sokoudjou's name multiple times. At one point, I think he was calling him "Sudoku". ----"CBS stands for 'Can't Beat Sokoudjou'" - Ranallo
-I wish they'd go with a two man booth of Gus Johnson and Pat Miletich. You play off Johnson's lack of MMA knowledge against Miletich's ability to explain things in concise terms that even new fans understand.
-Jimmy Lennon Jr. also deserves some grief for his overblown introductions. He called Jake Shields, "MMA's world renowned cagemaster". Do we even need introductions for the undercard? It's on TV. We have graphics telling us their records. I'd be a lot happier to never have to see the introductions again. They're a waste of time.
-How does WAMMA have enough money to advertise on the mat?
-Mousasi's trip on Sokoudjou was superb, yet they somehow did not show a replay.

-Hopefully this is the last time we have to see Sokoudjou portrayed as a top fighter.
-Jake Shields should never be allowed on CBS again. I found the fight somewhat entertaining, but this is an event geared towards casual fans. It was a terrible lead-in for the main event and hurt the overall ratings.
-Miller's entrance was embarrassing. If it was funny, I guess I could see the point of airing it.
-Big John McCarthy got a huge ovation. He's more popular than most fighters.

-I'm very surprised by the amount of people who feel like Fedor did not look great last night. Ten minutes after the fight, I had three emails telling me how it's now obvious that Brock Lesnar would destroy him. I got a totally different feeling watching his victory over Brett Rogers. What I saw was trademark Fedor and left me thinking that he's still the best in the world.
-Here's a rundown of the trademark Fedor we saw last night. --Jumping guard with a flying punch. No one does it better. --Pushing his opponent one way (loading the spring) then throwing them the opposite way (releasing it). Most fighters are in love with the clinch, but Fedor uses this technique a lot more. It either results in his opponent falling down or being totally off-balance and getting rocked with a punch. --Arm bar from trouble. Again, no one does it better. More fighters should copy how he does it for offense and to improve position. --Calmness. Most fighters panic and go into desperation mode when they get cut. Fedor simply went about his business like it was no big deal. Rogers mentioned after the fight how even though he knew Fedor was known for his calmness that it still threw him off.

-Fedor's style lends itself to criticism. He often gets into what others perceive as "trouble". This happened last night when Rogers had him on his back and was raining down punches. To Fedor, that is not a horrible position. He moved out of the way of most of the strikes and almost locked in an arm bar (if it was in a ring, he would have gotten it too). If you're on your back and you just hold on, that's a bad position. Fedor never does that, which makes it less of a troubling position. He uses the arm bar better than anyone not only as offense, but also as a means to escape the position and get back to his feet, which is exactly what happened against Rogers.
-Brett Rogers deserves all the respect in the world for his performance. You could tell he was nervous at the start, but he regained his composure and gave Fedor a true test. The way he took those punches and did not die was particularly impressive.
-One of my favorite parts of Mike Tyson fights (after prison) were the post-fight interviews. They were pure entertainment. Well, Fedor is starting to get towards that territory. I dare you to read the excerpt below and not smile.
Johnson: How did you feel tonight? Fedor: I felt very good. Thanks for asking.
That answer sums up Fedor perfectly. He's not wired like the rest of us.
-Did you notice when Fedor almost soccer kicked Rogers in the head? You could tell he was thinking about it then remembered he wasn't in a Pride ring.
-Fedor's interpreter looks like a fortune teller. |

Werdum vs Silva -Werdum came in 14 lbs heavier than his last fight in August. This worries me. Silva is bigger and can wear down Werdum, if he's not in the best condition. On pure skill, I'd give it to Werdum, but the conditioning thing swings it to Silva for me. -Silva Wins by 1st Round TKO
Mousasi vs Sokoudjou -Sokoudjou is like a fat girl with big boobs. They realize they have a big belly under their boobs, but choose to ignore it. To them, their boobs should be enough. Sokoudjou thinks the same way about his striking. In most cases, it is enough to win fights, but not when he faces a well-rounded opponent like Mousasi. Same way for a fat girl with big boobs. Those things might impress the guys at the neighborhood bar, but anywhere else the belly is her undoing. -Mousasi Wins by 1st Round Submission (90% chance it's an Arm-Triangle)
Miller vs Shields -I never liked Shields until he started being cocky. When athletes are arrogant and able to back it up, I tend to be a fan. -I'd be impressed if either fighter could finish the other. Seems like a decision looms. -Shields Wins by Unanimous Decision
Rogers vs Fedor -I'm excited to see Fedor face someone who has KO power. He really hasn't fought too many guys like that and it'll be interesting to see his gameplan. I don't count Sylvia or Arlovski as fighters with KO power. Both are solid strikers, but they don't put the fear of God in you when they load up. -It will also be interesting to see how Fedor handles his debut on network TV. There is a tremendous amount of pressure on him. He's been promoted as the face of MMA on CBS/Showtime. Will he be able to meet those expectations? Will he stand and trade with Rogers to keep the fight entertaining? -Fedor Wins by 1st Round Submission (Rear Naked Choke) |

- Other than the horrible title, it was very well done. Definitely better than "UFC Primetime", which felt forced. "Fight Camp 360" did a solid job of promoting the fight without being melodramatic. The title, though, is about as bad as it gets. I think we all need to come to an agreement and retire the term "360". Whenever a company wants to sound new and hip, they throw "360" at the end of a title - Xbox 360, ESPN 360, Anderson Cooper 360. Of course it always results in irony.
- Brett Rogers bought a house with the money he's going to make for fighting Fedor. Yeah, not a good sign.
- I'm pulling for Rogers to win just so he remains in the spotlight and we get to see more of his wife's hairstyle.
- This is the website for the Rogers camp. That's really his camp. I'm sure he'll be fine, thanks to this detailed description of Sambo along with some timely Clip Art.
- Is there a severe lack of indoor lighting in Russia? I've never seen indoor footage there that didn't look like it was shot in a closet with a lone candle burning.

2009 has been the most successful year in the history of the UFC. However, it's tough not to notice the black cloud hanging over things lately.
Brock Lesnar
-Forced to pull out of UFC 106 due to illness.
Lyoto Machida
-Wins highly controversial decision over Mauricio Rua. Planned rematch on hold due to hand surgery.
Anderson Silva
-Planned title defense against Vitor Belfort on hold due to elbow surgery.
Georges St-Pierre
-Remains on the sidelines due to groin injury suffered in victory over Thiago Alves.
It's only a matter of time before BJ Penn pulls a hamstring while running underwater with a rock.
