UFC 102 Live Results begin at 7:30pm ET when the Preliminary Card kicks off. Don't miss any of the action with our Live Coverage. We'll have quick results for the prelims, followed by Full Play-By-Plays for each of the PPV fights. As always, if you like the Live Results, please support our sponsors with some clicks. A few clicks goes a long way to supporting my addiction to fountain soda.
-For anyone who is bored, here's the Fedor/Mousasi exhibition match from last night. Personally, I think exhibitions suck, unless they result in the death of someone, which then sets up a grudge match on Christmas day between the dead guy's best friend and a Communist.
Preliminary Card
Marcus Aurelio vs Evan Dunham
-Dunham Wins by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)
Nick Catone vs Mark Munoz
-Munoz Wins by Split Decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28)
Tim Hague vs Todd Duffee
-Duffee Wins by 1st Rd TKO (7 seconds)
Justin McCully vs Mike Russow
-Russow Wins by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-26, 30-27)
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Chris Tuchscherer
-Gonzaga Wins by 1st Rd TKO
Ed Herman vs Aaron Simpson
-Simpson Wins by 2nd Rd TKO (Injury)
-Herman injured his left knee and could not continue.
-I want to prepare everyone for a night of strange scoring. This happens a lot in areas that don't see many MMA events. We've already had two split decisions with random 30-27 scores. There was also a 29-28 score in the Russow/McCully fight, despite the fact Russow thoroughly dominated it. I had him winning 30-26. Just be ready for some weirdness.
Brandon Vera vs Krzysztof Soszynski
Round 1
Sos comes right at him. Vera answers with a body kick. Solid leg kick by Vera. Another leg kick. The kicks have made Sos cautious. Goldberg just compared Vera to Anderson Silva. I guess if you take away all of Silva's dominance, Vera and him are sorta alike. Okay, not at all. Goldberg is an idiot and it took him less than fifteen minutes to prove it. Tie-up on the cage. Not much happening. Sos lands a left, but eats a leg kick. Knee to the stomach by Sos. Head kick blocked by Sos. Vera lands a leg kick. Vera ties him up and pushes Sos into the cage. Knees to the stomach of Sos. Sos shoots, but can't take him down. RNN Scores it 10-9 Vera.
Round 2
Sos lands a left. Vera comes back with a left of his own. Straight right connects for Sos. Sos presses Vera into the cage. Both trading light knees to the body. Fans getting restless. Back to the center. Sos tries for another takedown and it goes nowhere. Jab lands for Sos. More grappling near the cage. Sos finally gets the takedown. Vera moves back to one knee then gets back up. No damage taken while on the ground. RNN Scores it 10-9 Vera.
Round 3
Vera lands a right counter. Leg kick left to the head combo by Vera. Sos lands a short left. Sos going for another takedown that doesn't work. Clinch now and both throwing knees. Vera takes him down. Vera working from the side and lands a few punches to the head. Sos gets back up. Vera hits him in the balls. Short stoppage and we're back to the center. Right connects for Vera. Uppercut by Vera. Vera moving around and keeping his distance. RNN Scores it 10-9 Vera.
Vera Wins by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
-Typical boring Vera fight. He sat outside and kicked him in the legs.

This is another tough card to predict. I'm laying low and going with small plays. Don't forget... RearNakedNews.com will have UFC 102 Live Results being tomorrow night at 7:30pm ET. We'll do quick results for the prelims then Full Play-by-Plays for the PPV card, which starts at 10pm ET.
Brandon Vera vs Krzysztof Soszynski
-Vera by 2nd Round TKO
Keith Jardine va Thiago Silva
-Jardine by Unanimous Decision
Randy Couture vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
-Couture by Unanimous Decision
Other than that, I don't like much. I'll probably throw something on Chris Tuchscherer, but it wouldn't surprise me if he came out flat in his first UFC fight. At +285, it's probably worth the risk.

Ariel Helwani's interview with Heath Herring is hilarious and in need of some serious analysis.
"With Acting Career In Full Swing, Heath Herring In No Hurry To Return To UFC"
That's the longest headline in the history of the Internet and also very funny, even if it wasn't meant as a joke. In fact, it's probably funnier if it was not supposed to be funny.
"You know, I don't have anything scheduled right now with the UFC. Like I said, this acting stuff is kind of taking off, I've got some other things going on. I'm really not in a big hurry to jump back in there right now. I'm kind of riding this wave and seeing where it's going to take me."
Taking off? Wave? Are you kidding me? He was in a terrible movie that was probably seen by less than a thousand people. Now, he's in another soon-to-be terrible movie and all of a sudden he's the next Leonardo DiCaprio. Hearing fighters talk about acting makes me cringe. It's like watching a drunk friend talk himself into hooking up with a fat chick. No amount of spin can hide the fact that you're about to give up your dignity. Same exact thing with fighters. I'd much rather them say, "Someone offered me $10 grand to work for two days. You can't beat that."
"I play a gang leader in the beginning, and I chase the kids into this bunker where they get eaten by monsters."
I can't wait to hear what he'll play in his third movie. Hurry up, wave! The anticipation is killing me!
"I've got a bunch of different movies lined up. Don't have anything signed just yet, but you know, the film industry is kind of like the fight industry, there's always rumors, but things always seem to fall in place afterwards."
If the place is "straight to DVD", I agree.
"You see the fight with [Frank] Mir and [Brock] Lesnar and Lesnar just pretty much dominated Mir, knocked him out in the second round, and beat the hell out of [Randy] Couture in the second round. And it's like, Wow, I was the only one who was able to go the full time with that guy. It doesn't really benefit me to go backwards and fight new up-and-comer guys. It's not really what I'm there to do, or what I'm there for."
The only thing that would make this quote more ridiculous would be if he ended it with "I'm Heath Hernandez".
This is just a small sample of his absurdity. I implore you to read the entire interview. I'd make fun of more stuff, but I don't think I can top the Heath Hernandez joke.

The timing of the Lesnar/Carwin announcement still has me baffled. You can usually figure out the UFC's decisions based solely on money. When there is a big fight sitting out there, it trumps everything. Last year the UFC shook up the Heavyweight Division by granting Brock Lesnar a title shot against Randy Couture. Lesnar was 1-1 in the UFC at the time. For the UFC, it was not about giving the most worthy fighter a crack at the title. It was simply about putting on the biggest fight possible. UFC 91, headlined by Couture/Lesnar, went on to do a million PPV buys.
A year later the UFC has decided to again shake up the Heavyweight Division by giving Shane Carwin a title shot against Lesnar in November at UFC 106. The reason this baffles me is because they are turning their back on even the possibility of a rematch against Couture. Why would the UFC rush to book Lesnar's next fight a week before Couture faces Nogueira? It's like they don't want the outcome to play into their decision. If Couture went out and dominated, they'd feel tons of pressure to grant him a title shot. Instead, they're removing that possibility from the equation.
I'm not against Carwin getting the title shot. He's proven himself a contender and could give Lesnar some unique challenges. It is just strange to see the UFC turn down the chance of a rematch between Lesnar and Couture that could draw over a million buys. The first time they fought, the rest of the card was mediocre. With a couple other solid fights, it could approach UFC 100's 1.7 million buys.
I think there are several reasons they don't want the Couture/Nogueira fight influencing their decision. Nogueira is the last person they want in the title picture. He has two losses to Fedor and it would give Strikeforce more fuel to promote their newest acquisition. I don't think this is the main reason, but it's definitely something they considered. There is no need to do Strikeforce any favors. The less they have to work with, the better.
To me the biggest reason for the timing of the announcement is Couture's uncertain contract situation. Following his bout at UFC 102, he will have one fight remaining on the three fight contract he signed a year ago. The UFC would never offer Couture a title shot, unless he agreed to extend his contract, which would not be a simple process. The two sides spent most of 2008 arguing about contract issues and I don't see why things would be any different now. By booking the Lesnar/Carwin fight, the UFC averted a standoff with Couture.
There will still probably be some sort of standoff. The difference, though, is the UFC has more leverage. They can let Couture sit on the sidelines with one fight remaining on his contract, while the Heavyweight Division rolls on. Couture will not have the same level of bargaining power he did last time when he was the Heavyweight Champion. Instead, he'll be sitting around watching others overtake him in the title picture. As usual, the UFC controls the situation, but it's just weird to see them pass on such an inevitable PPV blockbuster.

I think he went to one of those surgeons the drug lords use to change their identity. If this is how he's gonna look from now on, he needs to change his nickname from "The Axe Murderer" to "The Florist". |

Before you freak out, let me explain my theory on this. Liddell has always been a company guy. He's still one of the biggest stars in the sport and his appearance on a mainstream show like this will bring in tons of casual fans who don't even know what MMA stands for. Liddell is essentially doing a promo tour for the UFC in exchange for the chance to fight again. In the end, they both get what they want. Some may cringe at the notion of Liddell doing the jitterbug on national TV (I'm kind of out of step with the current dancing trends), but if it gets us another chance to see him compete in the cage, I think it's worth it.
And, come on, don't act like you won't watch and laugh your ass off. The gifs alone will be worth it.

- The Carano/Cyborg stoppage was not early. Referee Josh Rosenthal did his job and you can't get upset over it. He gave Carano ample time to improve her position and she just laid there. He even gave her a verbal warning. All she really had to do was roll over. I think the moment got to Carano. She looked nervous the entire fight. By the time Cyborg was on top pounding her, she was ready for it to be over.
- Cyborg almost killed the future of WMMA when she slapped on that leg lock. That would have been it. Thankfully, Carano stayed calm and wiggled out of it. Then later she had to Hulk out of a kimura. I guess no one told Cyborg that submissions scare away casual fans.
- If I was a Canadian fan who ordered the event as a PPV, I'd be pissed. Only four fights were shown and they ended the telecast almost an hour early. The reason this happened is because Showtime has control over what fights are shown. If they don't agree to air something, it does not get shown. Strikeforce probably figured they wouldn't have any extra time because three five round title fights were scheduled. That still doesn't explain why they didn't have a backup plan in place. This is a good example of why the UFC does not have a TV deal with a major network. They refuse to agree to a deal, unless they retain control over production of the event.
- A 36 year old man with braces should never use the phrase "Chin Check".
- Now that Babalu almost got Michael Jackson'd by the pyrotechnics, can we all agree there's no need for explosions at an MMA event? The entrances as a whole were horrible. The music is some generic garbage that you can't even hear and of course the announcers talked the entire time. When done right, entrances are one of the cooler moments in MMA. For some reason, no one seems to get this. The UFC is just as guilty, although I blame that more on Goldberg/Rogan and less on the production team. They at least have the music loud enough for the viewer to hear. Strikeforce seems hell bent on destroying the entire process. It's like they had a big meeting and opened it up by saying, "How can we make entrances totally irrelevant?" Then a guy raised his hand and said, "Ramp, explosions, music no one has ever heard of, and have the announcers talk the entire time!"
- Interim Titles are idiotic. It makes no sense to me. If a champion does not defend their title, they should be stripped.
- Overall the event was underwhelming, but I'm willing to give Strikeforce a pass because of all the injuries and Nick Diaz refusing to take a drug test. Some events are cursed and no amount of last minute scrambling can save them. The good news is Strikeforce seems committed to putting on stacked cards and they really have no choice since the UFC started bombing them with counter-programming. If they get Fedor a quality opponent, I'll forgive them for ending the broadcast early and making me watch Werdum/Kyle instead of Hieron/Taylor.

Tracy Lee of CombatLifestyle.com came through for us. She even snapped some shots of the ring girls, who aren't that hot, but I appreciate the effort. If my marriage to Gina falls through, Tracy is definitely in line to be my next ex-wife. It's pretty sad that most of the other people in attendance didn't post more shots of Carano looking hot. I guess I'm just the type of guy who thinks her hotness should benefit the world, rather than be horded by perverts with pet tarantulas. Anyways, My God...

Earlier this week, Strikeforce released Phil Baroni and he then signed with the UFC. Strikeforce was not done with him, though. They sent out a press release, which basically badmouthed the hell out of him. I highlighted the important parts for you.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 13, 2009) - Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni has been released by world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion STRIKEFORCE.
The 33-year-old Baroni, a native of Long Island, N.Y, has lost four of his last seven bouts. In his last appearance, a welterweight (170 pounds) matchup with Joe "Diesel'' Riggs at St. Louis, Missouri's Scottrade Center, Baroni sustained a one-sided defeat by way of unanimous judges' decision.
"We wish Phil the best of luck and hope he can revive his career,'' STRIKEFORCE Founder and CEO Scott Coker said Thursday. "If he can, maybe one day, he can return and fight for us."
Baroni's most noteworthy fight in STRIKEFORCE was also the first STRIKEFORCE middleweight (185 pounds) MMA championship bout in history on June 22, 2007. Refusing to tap out, Baroni was choked unconscious by four-time world champion Frank Shamrock in the second round (4:00) of action.
The press release was a small jab at the UFC for signing him. The problem I have is that it's a low class move to throw a fighter under the bus after you release him. Baroni always gives a great performance and in doing so takes some serious damage. He deserves better than this. Strikeforce does not send out releases whenever they cut someone, either. This was a calculated move.
In the end, it backfired because they're the ones who look like idiots.
